The Benefits Of Boxing

As a martial arts gym, we have written extensively about the many fitness and psychological benefits of grappling sports, specifically Jiu-Jitsu and the implications it has on making people significantly more confident and competent in their overall capabilities. Grappling in martial arts is its own element. However, in the pursuit of helping people to understand how their bodies are meant to work to achieve higher levels of strength, joint health & vitality, we find that striking or boxing classes are something that cannot be ignored.

Boxing in itself has so many elements that that are unique to its craft, as with nearly all types of sports or martial arts. We will touch on these elements in detail to explain why we think it’s important to consider incorporating boxing classes into your routine at FITBJJ in Maryville / Alcoa.

Boxing classes for explosive strength

Boxers are often thought of as some of the strongest and toughest athletes in the world, and for good reason. It is commonly believed that the strength of boxers is mainly in the arm and shoulder muscles, but the truth is that boxing correctly requires full-body strength. Landing the most effective punches comes from a strong core and legs, just as much as the upper body, if not more. For this reason, boxing classes should help people understand the base principle of generating power from the lower body, through the kinetic chain, and ending the motion with the upper body. This takes a great deal of coordination and strength in all dimensions. And when you work the body in all planes of motion like you do in boxing and in grappling, that strength will translate to your everyday life as long as the technique is taught properly by a coach. On top of that, utilizing more muscles at one time increases the ability to burn far more calories for better weight loss capabilities.

Boxing for cardiovascular health

In pro-boxing, cardiovascular health is a necessity. One can be fighting for up to 12 three-minute rounds with just short one-minute breaks in between, meaning there is very little time for recovery before the intensity continues. This does not mean if you train boxing that you will necessarily be fighting anybody. This means that training your cardiovascular health is just as important as training your muscles or you simply won't be able to keep up with your opponent. However, the movement you learn itself will give you a great idea of how you can achieve similar cardiovascular fitness, while learning to throw proper strikes without necessarily hurting yourself or others.

Boxing for coordination

Hand eye-coordination is arguably the most important and one of the unique skills boxing training can teach you. Keeping your eyes on your surroundings, and on the target whilst also providing split-second reactions to your opponent's movements is essential for offence and defense. Training hand-eye coordination is something that is often overlooked in boxing training, but it should not be assumed that this comes naturally to everyone, so practice is key. Unlike grappling, boxing training for coordination teaches you a different type of reflex for incoming projectiles. These reflexes also aid in building confidence knowing that you reaction time is much faster than the average person.
