Self Defense To Bully-Proof Your Child

Today, there are many avenues one can take for self-defense and several ways it is marketed out to the masses. The truth is that self-defense as a term has been made quite ambiguous. As a result, many people reject the idea of ever participating in any self-defense classes or putting their children into a high-quality martial arts program. The reason for this is that many academies or courses neglect the wide variety of context involved in self-defense. Self-defense will always differ on not only the situation, but the actual individual themselves. For this article we will discuss the importance of self-defense to aid in the prevention of bullying amongst children.

As we know, there are several rules and regulations present in schools to prevent bullying. Unfortunately, bullying is still a prevalent part of social development in many cases. Statistics show that nearly 20% of kids between the ages of 12 & 18 experience bullying. Self-defense and certain forms of martial arts such as Jiu-jitsu can be a great tool to defend against, and even prevent bullying in more ways than just physically. We’ve discussed the practical use of Jiu-jitsu and its origin on our website before. We also have an article on how Jiu-jitsu can mentally make you more resilient and confident in many different stressful situations (BJJ for Mental and Physical Fitness).

There is no denying that bullies tend to prey on people who a physically smaller and/or more introverted. Self-defense and martial arts such as Jiu-jitsu open the doorway to not only being more confident in your physical capabilities, but that same confidence transcends into ones mental & emotional strength and discipline. Not only do you learn to defend yourself physically, but proper coaching implies mentally preparing children to understand how to avoid being bullied in the first place. This comes with being physically prepared to protect yourself if it ever came down to it.

Martial arts teach you to push past your limitations and discover what your inner strength is truly capable of by giving you the right knowledge and technology to get out of seemingly dangerous or stressful situations. The deeper importance of this comes down to understanding our strengths and weaknesses and learning how to better control them. Martial arts practitioners coming from a friendly training environment are typically far calmer, and less aggressive despite being physically capable. This is because self-defense and martial arts teaches you to mitigate a threat, and that alone gives one the confidence to go about their daily lives with less fear of not knowing what to do during an altercation. Also, when one practices Jiu-jitsu in a safe environment with a good community of people, you develop the physical and social skills while getting a great full body workout. The skills you learn teach you so much about the body, its mechanics, and how to leverage proper technique over a larger and stronger assailant.

Self-defense will also teach you about awareness and how to avoid putting yourself in potentially more dangerous situations. We always emphasize that not engaging and avoidance is the ultimate form of self-defense. However, as a parent, we understand how difficult it can be to keep track of your child 100% of the time. Whether it be in school or extracurricular activities, knowing they have the ability to at least defend themselves is a valuable trait that will transcend into their adulthood for an ultimately more confident attitude and a better life.
