Improve Your Physical & Mental Fitness With BJJ

What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was first developed around 1920 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr, George, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was taught traditional Kodokan Judo by a traveling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, in 1917. Later, they marketed their own self-defense system based on Judo and named it Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ eventually came to be its own defined Combat through the innovations, practices, and adaptation of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and became an essential martial art for modern MMA.

BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) was developed with the purpose of promoting the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper leverage and technique to control an assailant or submit them. As a grappling-based martial art, BJJ’s central theme involves learning how to control a resisting opponent in ways that force them into submission. Because controlling someone is generally easier on the ground versus a standing position, much of the techniques BJJ employs is centered around the skillsets of taking an opponent to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless. For this reason, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been considered by many in the martial arts community as the mother of all Martial Arts since its heavy influence on the industry.

Improve Your Fitness & Biomechanics

Jiu-Jitsu technique involves understanding body awareness, leverage, anatomy, as well many other factors I will touch on. BJJ (Specifically No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu), being a grappling-based sport, your body will eventually go through nearly every context of motion with your body at some point if you are taught a well-rounded game. Now think about how muscles in our body are meant to function to produce a force. In Jiu-jitsu, when accounting for technique, there are safer ways than others to apply BJJ technique that can be rather beneficial in strengthening your body in various context. For these reasons, BJJ provides the ability to not only learn how to use your whole body in an integrative and more functional fashion. When taught to apply proper Jiu-Jitsu technique, and utilizing its practice to supplement your fitness level, you will notice a significant increase in your overall mechanics and a much more stable and athletic frame.

Jiu-jitsu is also a fantastic form of weight loss. It is challenging and helps burn a lot of calories. It’s not uncommon for practitioners to burn upward of 500 calories in a single session. That alone adds up and can lead to significant weight loss and a boost in your metabolism (See our “Why You Should Really Stop Consuming Grains” article for more information on metabolism and grains). Because BJJ requires you to use nearly every muscle in your body, the significant integrative muscular activation also improves your body's ability to burn calories and improve muscle tone.

Improve Mental Health & Confidence

Jiu-Jitsu drills and specific technique training allows for not only a complete form of cardio to burn fat, but also teaches children and adults how to train grappling and learn how to defend themselves under a safe and professional environment. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is superior to other martial arts in this regard because the tactics and techniques revolve around overcoming opponents without necessarily causing them harm. What’s more, thanks to the advanced techniques, it’s not uncommon for a relatively small person to defeat a much larger and stronger opponent. Practicing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a fantastic way to improve our mental health and confidence. Because the sport involves continual growth and improvement, there is an inherent feeling of progression and fulfillment. Thanks to the social factor, we also spend time with positive and like-minded individuals who profoundly affect our outlook and world view.

On top of that, Jiu-Jitsu provides a great form of stress relief and/or stress management. Jiu-Jitsu, although a physical sport, it is far more tactical than one would think. The challenge of the game lies in small victories leading to reaching a more dominant position over your opponent or training partner. Most people find that Jiu-jitsu aids them in managing their stress by not only releasing endorphins and getting a good sweat, but also the sports innate ability to challenge your problem-solving skills to avoid leaving your body in a position of exposure to submissions. Escaping dire situations of disadvantage and reaching an advantageous position where you are now the threat is ultimately what represents the philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu that many apply to their daily lives.
